Our Acappella Sound

Our Acappella Sound

Acappella is about using the one instrument we always carry with us to spread happiness through song. For us, it sounds best in close, 4-part harmony where each of our singers finds a voice-part that best matches their natural singing range. Since becoming a mixed chorus, our focus is finding fun through acappella; many of our songs are ‘fun’ songs that many people will recognize and enjoy singing along with.

Our style of acappella started around 'the barberpole' in the late 1800's where ordinary voices sang familiar tunes and other ordinary voices sung harmony around it. People swapped parts back and forth, but the goal remained the same--share joy through song.

The style was so popular it became known as barbershop which has now spread around the world. Thanks to shows like “Glee” and movies like “Pitch Perfect”, this style has evolved so that it includes more and more songs you might have heard on the radio.

To us though, it's simply acappella happiness!

Discover the Magic of A Cappella Singing in the Barbershop Style

There is something truly special about hearing four voices blend together so perfectly that they seem to create a sound bigger than the singers themselves. This is the heart of barbershop harmony—a unique form of a cappella singing that has captivated audiences for generations.

At Stampede City Mixed Chorus, we celebrate the joy, excitement, and musical artistry of singing four-part harmony in the barbershop style. Whether performing on stage, entertaining at community events, or rehearsing together each week, our members experience the magic that happens when voices unite without instrumental accompaniment.

What Is Barbershop Harmony?

Barbershop singing is a style of a cappella music performed in four parts: Lead, Tenor, Baritone, and Bass. Each part plays an important role in creating the rich, full sound that makes barbershop harmony instantly recognizable.

Unlike many other forms of choral music, barbershop singers focus on achieving precise tuning and vocal balance. When the notes align perfectly, overtones are produced that create what singers often describe as a "ringing chord." These overtones can make it sound as though an additional voice has joined the harmony, creating a thrilling experience for both performers and audiences.

Singing Without Instruments

The term a cappella means "in the style of the chapel" and refers to singing without instrumental accompaniment. In barbershop music, every note, rhythm, and emotional expression is created entirely by the singers themselves.

Without instruments to rely on, singers learn to listen carefully to one another, adjust their voices, and work together as a team. This collaborative approach helps build strong musical skills while creating a deep sense of connection among chorus members.

More Than Music

Barbershop singing is about much more than learning notes and lyrics. It is about friendship, teamwork, and shared accomplishment.

Many people join a barbershop chorus because they love to sing. They stay because of the welcoming community they find. Rehearsals are filled with laughter, learning, encouragement, and the satisfaction of creating beautiful music together.

At Stampede City Mixed Chorus, singers of varying musical backgrounds come together with a common goal: to share the joy of harmony with each other and with our audiences.

A Performance Style That Engages Audiences

Barbershop performances combine musical excellence with entertainment. Songs often feature expressive storytelling, dynamic vocal arrangements, and engaging visual presentation. Audiences enjoy everything from heartfelt ballads and inspirational numbers to upbeat classics and crowd-pleasing favorites.

Because the music is performed entirely by voice, audiences can experience the pure sound of harmony in its most natural form.

Experience the Joy of Singing

One of the most rewarding aspects of barbershop harmony is that it is accessible to almost anyone who enjoys singing. Previous musical training is not required. New members learn through regular rehearsals, coaching, and the support of fellow singers.

The moment a new singer experiences their first ringing chord, they often understand why so many people become passionate about barbershop harmony.
