About Us...Where Acappella Meets Happy

__alt__

Singing acappella since 1955 we know entertainment. We know fun. We know how to make your voice happy!

What We Do at Stampede City Mixed Chorus

At Stampede City Mixed Chorus, we believe that great singing is built on friendship, learning, performance, and having fun together. Whether you're an experienced singer or completely new to harmony singing, there is a place for you in our chorus.

Weekly Rehearsals

We rehearse every Wednesday evening in a supportive and encouraging environment. Most rehearsals take place on the risers, although accommodations are always available for members with mobility challenges. Chairs are often used when learning new music, reviewing vocal techniques, or conducting chorus business.

At 7:00 PM sharp, the pitch is sounded and "Tune Time" begins. During this focused part of rehearsal, members warm up their voices, train their ears to hear and create resonance, and prepare for an evening of singing. Our performances are presented from memory, so rehearsals also include learning music and lyrics while developing strong vocal skills.

Our Performance Year

Our chorus year runs from September through July. We typically present two major productions annually:

  • A Spring Show in May
  • A Series of Christmas Shows during the holiday season

To help members balance chorus activities with their personal lives, most major performances are scheduled on Wednesdays whenever possible. Exceptions include our Spring Show and District Contest. Additional performance opportunities are optional and available to members who wish to participate.

Three Exciting Seasons

Fall & Christmas Season (August – December)

The fall season is our primary recruiting period and the perfect time for new singers to join.

During August and September, we focus on:

  • Welcoming new members
  • Learning new songs
  • Developing vocal and performance skills
  • Reviewing our existing repertoire

Each rehearsal is designed so newcomers can join comfortably and feel included right away.

From October through December, our attention shifts toward preparing for holiday performances that entertain audiences and often support local charities throughout the community.

Spring Season (January – May)

New members are also welcome to join during the spring season.

This period focuses on:

  • Learning and polishing repertoire
  • Improving vocal and performance skills
  • Preparing for our annual Spring Show

The Spring Show serves as both a musical showcase and an important fundraiser that supports the ongoing activities of the chorus.

Stampede Season (May – July)

As Calgary celebrates Stampede season, so do we.

During these months, we perform our country-themed repertoire at various events and venues throughout the city, sharing music with residents and visitors alike while celebrating Calgary's western heritage.

Singing in the Community

One of the most rewarding aspects of membership is participating in our community performances, known as "Sing Outs."

These performances allow us to share our music while connecting with audiences throughout Calgary. Past locations have included:

  • Heritage Park
  • Spruce Meadows
  • Senior living communities
  • Calgary Stampede venues
  • Community festivals and special events

Participation in Sing Outs is optional, but many members find them among the most enjoyable and fulfilling experiences of chorus life.

Continuing Education and Vocal Development

We are committed to helping every singer improve.

Throughout the year, we invite experienced coaches, clinicians, and music educators to work with the chorus. These experts help members strengthen their vocal technique, performance skills, musicality, and confidence.

Coaching sessions may take place during regular rehearsals or at special evening and weekend workshops.

Part of a Larger Singing Community

Stampede City Mixed Chorus is proud to be affiliated with the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Members may have opportunities to participate in events such as:

  • Evergreen District Division III Convention
  • Barbershop Harmony Society conventions and educational events

Participation in these activities depends on member interest and event location.

Participation That Fits Your Lifestyle

We understand that every member has different commitments and goals.

Singers are encouraged to participate at a level that works for their lifestyle, including deciding how many songs they wish to prepare for performance. Members are expected to support their learning outside rehearsal by listening to practice tracks, reviewing music, and keeping pace with the chorus learning schedule.

Our goal is simple: to help every singer become a little better than they were yesterday.

Quartets and Special Performance Opportunities

Members who wish to explore additional singing opportunities can participate in:

  • Traditional barbershop quartets
  • Show quartets
  • Valentine's Day singing groups
  • VLQs (Very Large Quartets) consisting of approximately eight singers

These smaller ensembles provide excellent opportunities for musical growth, leadership, and performance experience.

Social Events and Friendships

The chorus is about more than singing.

Throughout the year, members enjoy a variety of social activities including:

  • Christmas celebrations
  • Karaoke nights
  • Group outings
  • Special member events

Many lasting friendships have been formed through the shared experience of making music together.

Join a Growing Organization

Stampede City Mixed Chorus is a thriving and growing organization powered by volunteers. Beyond singing, many members contribute their talents in areas such as event planning, marketing, hospitality, costumes, administration, fundraising, and production support.

If you have skills, ideas, or enthusiasm to contribute, we would love to hear from you.

Whether you are looking to improve your singing, perform for audiences, make new friends, or simply experience the joy of four-part harmony, Stampede City Mixed Chorus welcomes you.
